David Bach

Dean of Programs and Professor, IE Business School

David Bach is Professor of Strategy and Economic Environment at IE Business School and serves as the school’s Dean of Programs. He is an expert in political economy, business-government relations, and non-market strategy and has published widely in leading academic journals and with practitioner publications including the Sloan Management Review, Financial Times, Business Strategy Review, and the Conference Board Review. His work on the nexus of business and politics has twice earned him a spot as ‘one to watch’ for the Thinkers 50 ranking of leading global business thinkers. In 2011, he was named one of the top 40 business school professors under 40.

Professor Bach has consulted with McKinsey & Co. and the Global Business Network and is an associate of Political Intelligence, an international lobbying consulting firm. An experienced teacher, he won the ‘best professor’ award at IE Business School in 2007. He received his Ph.D. and M.A. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley and holds a B.A. from Yale University.

German Arguelles

Founder and Chief Marketing Officer, Adidas International Training Program and  eSoccer

German Arguelles is the co-founder and CMO of adidas International Training Program and  eSoccer, a sports marketing and travel company based out of Atlanta, United States. He has over 10 years of experience in the United States soccer market and was formerly a Business Methodology Consultant and a Product and Project Manager for Microsoft Corporation.  He lived in the United States for 7 years where he graduated with a BA in International Economics while playing collegiate soccer for Carson Newman College, as well as going to Graduate School to the University of Tennessee to earn an MSc in Agricultural and Natural Resources Economics.  Most recently he has studied an Excecutive Program in Corporate Responsibility at Instituto de Empresa , and he is always looking at ways to connect the professional sports industry with the field of development through sports. He was born and raised in Asturias where he grew up playing the beautiful game with his dad and (3) three brothers.

Waya Quiviger

Executive Director of the Master in International Relations, IE Business School

Waya Quiviger joined IE Business School as Managing Director of the International MBA program in October 2003. She is currently Director of Special Projects in Social Impact Management and Executive Director of the Master in International Relations. Waya is responsible for the Annual “Change in Action” MBA conference, focused this year on finding solutions for the Base of the Pyramid, the world’s poorest segment of the population. She is also the coordinator of the student-led Social Responsibility Forum, IE’s largest annual symposium on social and environmental issues. Waya holds a Master’s in Management from the Hautes Ecoles Commerciales (HEC) in Paris and a Master’s in Politics of the World Economy from the London School of Economics. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Business Administration at IE specializing in Social Entrepreneurship. Prior to joining IE, she worked for the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland and managed a community of outstanding young leaders, many of them social entrepreneurs. She has also consulted for the Women’s Forum and the Club de Madrid.

Jose Martín Cabiedes

Managing Partner & Partners Cabiedes SCR, VC-seed Fund

Previously, he was Executive Director of Alternative Investment Asset ManagementBBVA, taking responsibility for selecting and monitoring investments in Private Equity, Hedge Funds and all sorts of non-traditional investment vehicles.  

In 2000 Jose founded with three partners first Spanish alternative investment fund, "BBVA& PARTNERS ABSOLUTE RETURN FUND", where he combined the work of portfolio manager in the technology sector and telecommunications, and business development.

Jose is an industrial engineer by UPCO (ICAI) and Master in Business Administration from IESE. He has been visiting professor at the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid, and the Institute of Financial Analysts, providing asset management programs. He is director of the Europa Press news agency.

In 1999 he founded and currently chairs the Chandra Foundation, specializing in the application of new technologies and the Internet in the nonprofit sector. Chandra currently manages numerous Internet sites, several of which are undisputed leaders in their sector.

Justin Goldbach

The Aspen Institute 

Justin is a founding member of the Aspen Institute's Center for Business Education, wherein he worked to integrate social, environmental, and ethical thinking into business school curriculum and business practice. Managing relationships with over 150 schools in 24 countries, Justin led innovative programs such as the Beyond Grey Pinstripes b-school ranking, requiring analysis of over 80,000 pages of submitted data, and the Faculty Pioneer Awards, called the “Oscars of the business school world” by the Financial Times. Developing relationships with a wide range of corporate partners is central to the success of the Institute's annual Business & Society International MBA Case Competition, a program Justin created and still directs as an Advisor. He frequently represents the Institute at dialogues and conferences around the world, and continues to speak on topics related to corporate social responsibility, philanthropy, and sustainability in business practice and education.

Justin holds a B.A. from New York University and a M.Sc. in Public Policy and Administration from the London School of Economics. While an undergraduate, he interned in the office of two Congressmen and in the Harlem office of former President William Jefferson Clinton. Justin is a volunteer docent at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Joe Haslam

Vice President, Stratemic

Joe is Vice President at Stratemic Capital, a boutique firm specialising in Disruptive Innovation investments and projects.  A native of Ireland, his career has principally been spent in the strategy and marketing areas of the enterprise software industry, with brief forays into Internet security, video‐game production and smart‐phone usability. 

He was on the founding team of Marrakech, a dot.com era company that raised over $70m in Venture Capital and grew to employ 250 people on four continents. It was later sold and continues to operate today as a profitable stand‐alone business.  As well as in Madrid and Dublin, Joe has lived and worked in the US, the UK, Norway and France. He is a past President of the Spanish Irish Business Network, a mentor at Startup Bootcamp Madrid and a Professor in the Wayra Spain Academy.

An MBA graduate of IE Business School, Joe is a mentor in the IE Venture Lab as well as a Adjunct Professor at IE. Married and with two kids, he is a keen mountaineer and has done four of the seven summits.

 

Peter Bryant

IE Professor

Peter Bryant joined Instituto de Empresa's Entrepreneurship Faculty in 2009, having earned his PhD in 2006 from the Macquarie Graduate School of Management in Sydney, Australia. His research focuses on the origin and evolution of entrepreneurial organizations, their capabilities and strategies. His research program synthesizes a number of disciplines and fields, including social cognitive psychology, organizational theory, the theory of the firm and competitive strategy. More specifically, Peter investigates how the behaviors and cognitions of entrepreneurs influence the founding and growth of new ventures. Peter explains: “I am fascinated by the initial conditions of entrepreneurial organizations. I want to understand what happens when diverse individuals join forces to pursue a collective dream.”  Prior to commencing his academic career in 2006, Peter held a number of management roles in a range of industries, including Qantas Airways, St George Bank, Deloitte and A&B Venture Capital.  

Joaquín Garralda

Professor of Strategic Management and CSR & Dean of Academic Affairs, IE Business School

Specialized in strategy, Professor Joaquín Garralda has spent over two decades studying the internal culture of business organizations and strategic analysis. This background has led him in recent years to the area of corporate social responsibility. 

At present Professor Garralda is The UN Global Compact's Spanish Association Secretary, since 2000, he has been a member of the Ethics Committee of Morgan Stanley’s Ethics Fund (at present Invercaixa), and he is involved in the development of manuals that permit the measurement and evaluation of CSR. 

Joaquín holds a degree in Economic Sciences from Universidad Complutense Madrid, an MBA from IE and the ITP form London Business School. He has combined his teaching career with intense professional activity as a consultant in the fields of organisation and strategy in diverse companies, as a director at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and member of several managerial boards. 

Jose Luis Ruiz de Munain

Vice President, IE's Social Responsibility Forum 2011

José Luis Ruiz de Munain studied economics at the University of Navarra and HEC Switzerland. He worked for one year in Thailand, where he was deeply involved in programs aimed at supporting local Social Entrepreneurs and promoting CSR public policies. He has been consultant and trade specialist for the Spanish Embassy in India as well. Jose Luis's career goal is to help create an ecosystem that will bring together social investors, entrepreneurs and governments to tackle most pressing social and environmental problems.

Martha Thorne

Associate Dean, IE School of Architecture and Executive Director, Pritzker Architecture Prize

Martha Thorne is currently Associate Dean for External Relations at IE School of Architecture & Design and also the Executive Director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, a position she holds since 2005.  In recent years, Ms. Thorne has led the architecture selection process for various public institutions.  In this role, she defined a process and assisted trustees and/or building committee through it in order to identify and select an appropriate architect for the commission at hand.

Previously, she worked as a curator at the Department of Architecture at The Art Institute of Chicago, curing exhibitions, developing publications, and participating in the ground-breaking study on collecting, archiving, and exhibiting digitally-created design materials.  Prior to her tenure in Chicago, Ms. Thorne resided in Madrid, where she organized and produced exhibitions and publications on architecture for various public institutions including the Ministry of Public Works and Urbanism (MOPU),  the Ministry of Culture, Madrid Capital Cultural and many others.  In Spain, she was a member of the three-person editorial board of Quaderns d'Arquitectura I Urbanisme, the 100 + year-old journal originating in Barcelona. 

Ms. Thorne received a Master of City Planning degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Affairs from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She undertook additional studies at the London School of Economics.  She is the co-author of the books Masterpieces of Chicago Architecture  and Skyscrapers: The New Millennium, editor of David Adler: The Elements of Style, editor and author for The Pritzker Architecture Prize: The First Twenty Years, and author of numerous articles for architectural journals and encyclopedias.
